Capital of the Nabateans around 100 B.C., Petra is alleged to be the city from which Herod the Great came from and where St. Paul studied for several years. Designed to discourage its enemies, the only way one entered or left this fortress was through a narrow, twisting canyon known as the Siq. Ride a docile horse the 1-1/2 miles to the entrance of the city. Soon you approach the imposing and dazzling Treasury, imbedded in the face of the mountain. Wander through this ancient Nabatean city carved out of the multihued rocks which surround its hidden valley. With its magnificent Treasury and rose-colored temples and amphitheaters, Petra must truly be one of man's most spectacular accomplishments. (B,D)
